Course Information

Description

Anatomy and Physiology I is the first part of a two-course sequence. It is a study of the structure and function of the human body including cells, tissues and organs of the following systems: integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous and special senses. Emphasis is on interrelationships among systems and regulation of physiological functions involved in maintaining homeostasis.

Prerequisites

Basic skills competency in reading, writing, and math.

Learning Outcomes

1. Use anatomical terminology to identify and describe locations of major organs of each system covered. (PSLOs 1, 2, 3)(Measured by embedded test question)

2. Explain interrelationships among molecular, cellular, tissue, and organ functions in each system. (PSLOs 1, 2, 3)(Measured by embedded test question)

Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer.

There is a textbook and an access code that are required for this course. The textbook and access code are available at the LSCPA bookstore as a packaged bundle with the ISBN number 978-0-135-19376-1. The textbook is Human A&P, 2nd ed by Erin Amerman. The access code is "Modified Mastering A&P".

The ISBN number for the Mastering A&P access code is 978-0-134-78807-4
The Access code can also be purchased directly from Pearson on the Mastering A&P site (Cheapest place). If purchased online, there will be 2 options (approximate prices) a $70 version and a $120 version. The ONLY difference between these is the $120 version includes an electronic textbook (etext) while the $70 version does not. This MAP access code is ABSOLUTELY required and you will also be able to use it for both the lecture and the lab. If you have an MAP access code used with the Amerman textbook that is less than 24 months old (since it was activated) you do not need to purchase another. On the first day of class, Instructions for purchase will be posted in the Announcements on Homepage of the course BlackBoard page.

Exam I: Pearson Mastering Assignment Homework scores for Chapters 1-3 will serve as your EXAM I Grade. There are 11 Mastering Assignments for Chapters 1-3. I will calculate the average the 10 highest scores, and this will serve as your EXAM I Grade.

Exam II: 10/11/20 at 10 pm until 10/15/20 at 10 pm (Chapters 4,5,6,7)

Exam III: 10/25/20 at 10 pm until 10/29/20 at 10 pm (Chapters 8,9,10)

Exam IV: 11/15/20 at 10 pm until 11/19/20 at 10 pm (Chapters 11,12)

Final Exam: 12/5/20 at 10 am until 12/8/20 at 10 pm (Chapters 13,14,15)

Homework assignments will represent 16.67% of your overall grade.

83.33% Lecture Exams (5 exams) and 16.67% Homework Assignments Average.
There will be five online lecture exams. Each lecture exam will be worth a maximum of 100 points.
There will be homework assignments (Pearson Mastering; online) that will be worth a maximum average of 100 points.
Homework Assignments Average = (total homework points earned/total maximum homework points for all assignments; for example, 700/760=92 points for homework; maximum of
100 points).
This is an online class. It is YOUR responsibility to have a RELIABLE computer AND Internet access for the duration of this course. Please note that while many of the course materials can be accessed using a cell phone and/or tablet device, there are many questions on the homework assignments that can only be accessed on a computer (desktop or laptop). In addition, EXAMS CAN ONLY BE TAKEN ON A LAPTOP OR DESKTOP COMPUTER. If your computer breaks for any reason during the semester, IT DOES NOT EXCUSE YOU FROM THE REQUIREMENTS AND DEADLINES OF THE COURSE. It is YOUR responsibility to make sure all assignments and exams are completed by their due date. Any assignments not completed by the end of the availability date will receive a grade of "0" zero.

Course Policies

Instructor Policies

No grades are dropped when calculating averages.
No makeup exams are given, and there are NO re-takes on any exam.
Lecture and Lab grades are NOT combined. Each course will be graded independently. Unexcused Exams that are not taken as scheduled will receive a grade of zero.
All lecture assignments are completed using information in the textbook and the Mastering A&P website.
The assignments are completed on the Mastering A&P site and are accessed by the link on the LECTURE course website. The same Pearson Mastering A&P access code is used for both Lecture Pearson Mastering Assignments and Pre-Lab Pearson Mastering Assignments.

Attendance Policy

Attendance IS REQUIRED.
If you have questions, you can come by during my office hours, email me at anytime, or post your question in the Discussion Board of the course BlackBoard page. You will need to schedule time to complete exams during their period of availability.
You will be able to take an exam after the scheduled availability period, but there will be a time penalty imposed (10% time reduction for each day that student is late taking the exam).

If you miss an exam because of an excused absence, your lowest lecture exam score will be used as the score for the exam that you missed. Excused absences include medical and family emergencies and are determined at the instructor's discretion. You can only miss one exam with an excused absence (excluding the final), and you must take the final exam. Poor preparation or conflict with other scheduled exams is not a valid excuse for missing an exam.

Academic Honesty

Academic honesty is expected from all students, and dishonesty in any form will not be tolerated. Please consult the LSC-PA policies (Section IX, subsection A, in the Faculty Handbook) for consequences of academic dishonesty.

Facility Policies

No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom.
Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission.
